The long long story of Me and Medium format to getting My Bronica SQ-Ai SLR

My first encounter with medium format was using my first Twin lens reflex(TLR), Yashica Mat 124G. I was completely sold after seeing the quality that came off the 120mm negative.

It was a pleasure to use the TLR, looking down at the screen as if it was a video recorder...a live-view on a manual viewfinder that is like a lcd on the back of the digital compact camera. Everything appear so nice thru the projected screen.

With just 12 shots for a roll of film, the smooth handling of the camera and all the attention that you get from the passerby, the whole process is pretty enjoyable! By the time you noticed, the film reached its last frame.

So how did a Bronica SQ-Ai SLR came into the picture??

This all happened since last month during our trip to Malacca, David brought his very nice Rolleiflex(Shown in the below entry) along. Well, with all the handling and poisoning, i was rather excited to pick one of this up...and i was so near in bidding one off ebay...but i never.

I had like 6 copies of the TLR in my cabinet, and it just dont make sense to get the Rolleiflex. Of course, its one of the best looking german made prestige camera but given the market price of it and the condition of those in the market, i just couldnt proceed with getting one.

But i didnt give up the idea of getting a camera, so i thought, why not start a thread in CS to ask more about Medium format SLR? Try out a new system instead of getting the Rolleiflex.
That was where i get to know more about the various different format that i can shoot with the 120mm film.

The decision-making process started with trying to decide which medium format SLR size I would buy into, 645, 6x6 or 6x7? Generally most 6x7 camera are quite heavy. I didnt like 645 format size although you can get 16 shots out of the 120mm film.
6x6 format compromise in all aspect and I decided upon 6x6. Now I need to decide which company to buy into.
Given the weight and size of the camera, the choice came down to only Hasselblad or Bronica.
As I was going thru the prices of both systems it became a perverse experience to realize how poor I was. The price of admission into the world of Hasselblad was affordable but subsequent purchases of lenses and accessories would not be. So much so that Bronica became the only realistic choice for me to pursue. I know given the price today vs the price in the past, it was considered very cheap. However, given the humble monthly income that i fetched, i decided to be a little more conservative in my spending.

Hasselblad like the Rolleiflex was famous for its aesthetic appearance that dig every single chick that chanced upon it. Well, since i couldnt afford it, i wont post a picture of it here!

In Summary, Bronica was designed by a Japanese guy who wanted a camera of his dream, probably something which most other brands cannot offered him. It was such determination and dreams that created one of the best camera system in the market.

You may wish to read more here.

i know many others would have go against the idea to get a system where the company no longer exist. But think it this way, if the camera spoil, picking any single part of it from the market is affordable. Repairing a malfunction hasselblad item can cost alot more..plus, there isnt any mechanical camera that cannot be repaired...:)

I spend weeks doing some research on prices and the camera and with the help of some of the seniors in CS, i managed to narrow down the package that i was looking for at my budget.
Finally, i picked this set from a very nice forummer(decided against buying it from ebay)

Its a complete set!

It was almost immediate when i run a roll of Lucky 100 thru it!

How does it perform?

It was an amazing experience using the Bronica! After 2 frames and some familiarization with the camera, the handling is smooth!
The pictures turned out way much better than i thought it will be!

Well after all, i have not use a hasselblad before so cant really compare the 2 but in my own opinion, this is definitely a good system for me! I wont be shooting lesser 120mm with it definitely! Vice versa, its going to be the start of a new shooting experience!

A day with a Rolleiflex

I had the honour and pleasure to use the Rolleiflex 2.8E(Rolly), all thanks to Mr David who kindly lend me his copy.

So i was wondering why a Rolly is so sought after where there are lots of other TLR available in the market. The moment i hang this camera on my neck, it attracts lots of attention. Looking thru the viewfinder, i could see almost everyone smiling at the camera. It's really a chick magnet! The camera on its own is very charming!

Pardon me for now blowing the dust away before taking this picture!

IMG_9225

I compared with my mamiya c330 and the Rolly looked so refine like a gentleman beside it.

Obviously, the Rolly has a brighter VF.
IMG_9213

The only thing that i like my Mamiya is the ability to do close focusing! Its so amazing how close i can go with a TLR!

So here are some shots that i randomly snapped at Chinatown. Using Lucky 100(One of the film that curl like mad), here are some lucky shots!

Shot at 2.8 mainly!

My personal opinion on this camera?? Well, its a very sturdy & reliable TLR like all german made stuff. Optics wise, perfect! But given the current market price for this camera(which i can trade for 3 minolta autocord), most probably i wont be buying it...definitely not now! :)

However, if you already own one! Treasure it, its definitely a gem!

The shoe maker

In my recent trip to Malacca, we spotted this traditional shop that sells beaded shoes.
Peranakan beaded slippers, also known as kasot manek, literally meaning shoe beads, is a type of shoe that dates back to the early twentieth century. These shoes were worn by a Peranakan women, also known as a nonya.
The intricacy and fine workmanship of a pair of beaded slipper is also a hallmark of highly accomplished nonya.

Uncle was telling us that currently, only Malacca is still producing this type of shoes and that the beads are sewed on one by one. The whole process take more than 2 months to complete just a pair of shoes. Of course, with the worksmanship and effort, a pair of beaded shoes would demand an expensive price.

Uncle shared the stories of how the shop was passed down to his generation..

Unlike most seller, the uncle was not all about the sales of shoes. He took pride in the items that he made and is more than willing to share the stories and histories to us.

If you ever visit Malacca, please do visit his shop. You should see a pair of 3-inch shoes right on display at the entrance!

A sunny noon at MBS

Its been awhile since i last shoot with a 6x6 medium format film and so i decided to bring my minolta autocord down for a test shot before my trip. Since Holly and Fionis are both at Marina Bay Sands, i decided to bring it along for a walk and shoot session.

The shooting experience with a TLR is so different. Mesmerized and attracted to the big beauty screen, you get to frame your shots nicely without people noticing that you are aiming at them. Compared to a normal camera, people are more curious than defensive against you...

The feeling is so relax compared to shooting a RF or DSLR...

She had a cast on her legs but yet so happily asking people to take a picture of her, without showing her legs.
Cheerful on a sunny bright day

Never thought that i would find a kid so young and emo
Im emo

They always say that once you shoot a TLR, you get attracted with it all...that you just wish to shoot more especialy with only 12 shots in a roll...Its true!

Chiyoko Super Rokkor 5cm f2

Chiyoda Kōgaku, later renamed Minolta, made a range of Leica screw lenses for its Minolta 35 series camera, a Leica copy made between 1947 and 1958. Chiyoko is a shortened version of the name (CHIYOda KOgaku).

Of which, the chiyoko Super Rokkor 5cm f2 has received the most praises.
No doubt about its quality since its a 7 elements/4 groups, following summitar design.

All thanks to Ed, I had the chance to own a nice copy of this lens.
Like all old vintage lenses, this copy is build like a tank and heavy on its own. The chrome metal of the parts weigh quite a fair bit.

Well since i was street shooting that day, i decided to test out this lens.

And a bokeh freak like me would definitely like to see how this lens will perform wide open. So here's Holly helping out as my model for this test shot...

These pictures are from ilford HP5+, pull 1 stop, and develop using HC110, dilution H.

@f2, bokeh seems a little harsh, but the swirling motion produced from this bokeh really wows me.
Untitled-Scanned-23

It does produced a little 3D effect.
Untitled-Scanned-30

After testing the bokeh, i decided to try on its handling and performance on streets where most of which are shot at f2.8.

My conclusion, this lens is sharp and renders nice contrasty pictures. Its definitely a nice lens to use!
I will update this entry with on going test with this lens..such as shooting in colors etc. Stay tuned!

A little Reflection for 2011, hopes for 2012

It was a buying non stop year in 2011, so coming 2012, i really wish to narrow down on what i really need...Would love to focus more on photography rather than shopping.

I will also be writing reviews on the various vintage lenses that i have acquired so far. Definitely more meaningful than just buying and collecting these lenses.
In a way, it will also force me to shoot more and make better decision which of these lenses should go...

Well, no harm having a wishlist for 2012, so after going thru a few rounds of eliminating, i managed to cut down to the below few.

1) leica M3 DS
2) Billingham f1.4 series bag, something which i should have bought since long ago...
3) A better scanner than my canon 8800f
4) Probably a 35mm lens and a 50mm lens which i have yet to decide on or get a canon 70-200mm

2012 will be a year with less travelling, where these savings will help me with my travel plans in 2013...so save now, enjoy later :)

Well, hopefully in the coming year 2012, things will get better :)

Pushed the film to 1600...
I think it must have been a long time since i last push a film and the results wasnt fantastic...
Here are some of the better ones...
